Latino Magazine Rates CLU High

For the third straight year, Cal Lutheran University has been selected as one of the best schools for Hispanics in the United States by “The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education” magazine.

Each year since 1995, the Paramus, N.J.-based magazine has sent out surveys to the approximately 3,800 public and private universities across the country, asking questions about recruiting, enrollment, graduation and policies on Hispanic student programs.

The magazine, which is published biweekly with a circulation of 26,000, then selects 750 schools offering the most opportunities to Hispanic students.

“The purpose of the publication is to congratulate schools that have gone out of their way to recruit and retain Hispanics in the school population,” said Suzanne Lopez-Isa, public relations director for the magazine.

Lopez-Isa said 8,000 extra copies of the “Publishers Picks” issue are distributed to high schools with high percentages of graduating Hispanic students across the country to help guidance counselors, parents and students select colleges.

CLU’s student body is diverse. Hispanic students make up about 14.1% of the 1,471 undergraduate students attending the Thousand Oaks university. Cal Lutheran also has a Latin American Student Organization and supports numerous Hispanic cultural events, such as Las Posadas and Festival de Encuentros, along with drama productions, art shows and lecture series.
