To the disappointment of some residents, the City Council voted 3 to 2 on Tuesday to reappoint both Peter Herzog as mayor and Richard Dixon as mayor pro tem, citing their leadership in annexation and anti-El Toro airport issues. A number of residents turned out hoping to see Councilwoman Kathryn McCollough become the first African American mayor in Orange County. McCollough is the only council member who has not served as mayor. For the second time, McCollough was nominated for both positions by Councilwoman Marcia Rudolph, who said McCollough was long overdue a chance to serve in one of the leadership posts. McCollough was quick to praise the council for its solidarity on major issues, but said she was disappointed about being denied the mayor’s spot, a ceremonial post. Councilwoman Helen Wilson said her support for Herzog and Dixon wasn’t a vote of no confidence in McCollough and that next year could be different.
