Federal Bias Law Covers Religion
* “Court Ruling Reveals Loophole in Bias Law” [Nov. 13] reveals far more bias than loophole. California law has always exempted religious employers from employment- and housing-discrimination laws.
The article’s premise--that a vast array of parochial schools, hospitals and other religious institutions can evade discrimination law--is simply false. Religious employers are subject to federal antidiscrimination laws.
The plaintiff, June McKeon, could have filed her case under federal law and obtained full redress. What she could not have obtained is unlimited potential damages, available only under state law.
