Whiteman Airport to Get New Fuel Tanks

Share

In an effort to update operations, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works will oversee installation of a pair of new 20,000-gallon aviation fuel tanks at Whiteman Airport early next year.

The tanks, which are 33% larger than the existing obsolete units, will bring the busy airport into compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s new underground fuel-tank standards, a department spokesman said.

Since 1970, aircraft have refueled from trucks, which draw from an underground storage facility. The new facility will include a fuel island and dispensers, a leak detection and monitoring system and a self-service credit card system, similar to those used in conventional gas stations.

The project--estimated to cost between $370,000 and $430,000--is scheduled to begin in February and be completed by April.

“This project will bring the airport into the new century,” said Ted Gustin, chief of aviation for the public works department.
