Teen Hurt in Explosion Released From Hospital

A Santa Clarita teenager--one of two Hart High School students severely burned in an explosion during a high school physics experiment--was released Sunday from the hospital, a spokesman said.

Nolan LeMar, 17, of Castaic, was admitted to the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital the day before Thanksgiving with second-degree burns over 12% of his body. The experiment was intended to propel tennis balls using “cannons” made of apple juice cans filled with methanol--wood alcohol.

“The prospect for Nolan of a complete recovery is good,” hospital spokesman Larry Weinberg said. “He’s had skin grafts. Doctors will watch that. He may need further grafts, but the prospect for his complete recovery is very good. He was a very lucky young man.”

A classmate, Christopher James, remained at the burn center in critical but stable condition, said Weinberg, who added that doctors were still worried about possible infection. “He [James] is by no means out of the woods,” Weinberg said.
