Panel Considers Bond Proposals for Park, Police

Share

A Los Angeles City Council panel approved a revamped bond proposal for Exposition Park on Thursday, but the lawmakers raised questions about a possible bond measure for the police and fire departments.

The ad hoc committee on capital improvements sent to the full council a request for a $36.25-million bond for Exposition Park--scaled down from the $46.5-million request that failed to win voter support last month.

But council members tangled over the public safety bond, which failed to make last month’s ballot. A panel convened by Mayor Richard Riordan and Council President John Ferraro recommended that the council approve a $500-million bond request. But another internal City Hall working group has a larger request for an $862.7-million bond plus a nearly $94-million special tax.

The council members are expected to discuss those issues again Monday.

The Exposition Park bond is expected to be voted on in council next week. Both proposals are targeted for the April municipal election.
