* MCI WorldCom Inc. confirmed it will fire 2,000 employees in the U.S., or 2.7% of its work force, as part of a plan to trim $2.5 billion in expenses. The cuts will be mostly among employees in network operations and information technology such as software development. Cuts will be made throughout the U.S., with operations in Texas, Oklahoma and North Carolina most affected.

* Ameritech Inc. shareholders overwhelmingly approved a proposed $56-billion merger with regional phone rival SBC Communications Inc., whose shareholders approved the deal Thursday. The merger must be approved by federal regulators, who say they’re taking a hard look at whether the merger--and a $52-billion deal that would combine Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE--would be in consumers’ interests.

* Delta Air Lines Inc. said SkyWest Inc. will stop carrying Delta’s commuter passengers from Los Angeles to six California cities, effective April 4, by mutual agreement. SkyWest provides 39 daily flights for Delta from Los Angeles International Airport to Bakersfield, Fresno, Monterey, Palm Springs, San Diego and Santa Barbara. Delta, which owns an equity stake in SkyWest, will continue to provide 15 daily flights at LAX.

* Revlon Inc. sold its 85% stake in Cosmetic Center Inc., a chain of 253 stores based in Maryland. The stake, acquired last year, was sold for an undisclosed price to investment company York Management Services Inc.
