Low-Income Families Get Some Preschool Help
Education and government officials will gather Wednesday at Northridge Middle School, for the official opening of a preschool aimed at helping local low-income families.
Principal Bob Kinsella said the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Child Development Division chose the site for the state-sponsored preschool after he told them an underused agriculture classroom was available.
The classroom was spruced up, and furnished with lowered drinking fountains and smaller furniture to accommodate 3- and 4-year-olds, he said. Thirty-two children are enrolled in the preschool, which opened in November; its capacity is 48.
Sheila Derrig, assistant superintendent at the district’s child development division, said her office generally searches for available facilities after receiving state funding for preschools.
There are 20 state-sponsored preschools in the LAUSD’s 6th district, represented by board member Julie Korenstein, Derrig said.
