A government plane was shot down Monday over the central highlands, killing the five crew members and five passengers aboard, the air force said.

The Russian-made Antonov-12 crashed just north of Kuito, about 300 miles southeast of Luanda, the capital, according to an air force statement, which did not accuse UNITA rebels of the shooting.

The rebels have taken four towns in central Huambo province and four others in neighboring Bie province since Dec. 4, state radio said Monday.
