Share

The Valley Community Clinic in North Hollywood is among five Los Angeles-area social service agencies that received grants totaling $1.2 million from the California Community Foundation, which is creating educational programs to prevent teen pregnancies.

The foundation, established last year by the Audrey Backus estate, will eventually provide $16 million for teen programs and elder care.

The other agencies receiving grants announced Tuesday are the Bienvenidos Children’s Center, Inc. in East Los Angeles, the California Family Health Council Inc. in South-Central Los Angeles, the Human Services Assn. in Bell Gardens and the Asian Pacific Health Care Venture in Hollywood.

The agencies, each awarded about $200,000, will create family-planning and health education-programs for teens and young adults. They also will hire counselors to teach parents how to discuss sex and pregnancy issues with their children.

Bienvenidos will also institute “Safer Sex Fridays,” a program to include a walk-in testing service for sexually transmitted diseases.
