Orange County has more elementary schools nominated for National Blue Ribbon awards this year than any other county in California.

The state Department of Education announced that it has nominated 49 public schools for the prestigious award, which alternates years in recognizing outstanding elementary and secondary schools. Of those 49, nine are in Orange County. The second highest number was seven, in Los Angeles County.

The Orange County nominees are: Concordia and Moulton elementary schools in the Capistrano Unified district; Laguna Road Elementary in the Fullerton Elementary district; Meadow Park and Westwood Basics Plus in Irvine Unified; Los Alamitos and Lee in Los Alamitos Unified; Lincoln in Newport-Mesa Unified; and Cielo Vista in Saddleback Valley Unified. None of the schools has previously won the national award.

The applications of the nominated schools are reviewed by a national education panel, which then selects a number of those sites for two-day visits. Winners will be announced May 25, 1999. Schools are judged on such criteria as teaching leadership, parental and community support, and standardized test scores.
