Restored Memorial in Veterans Park Unveiled

The first phase of a beautification campaign for Veterans Park has been completed.

Mayor Richard Riordan and Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky were on hand Wednesday night to illuminate a refurbished Spanish-American War Memorial. The memorial, once covered in juniper trees, is now surrounded by a paved, landscaped plaza.

Last week, as part of the beautification efforts, a 1.1-mile stretch of Wilshire Boulevard between Veteran Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard became known as Veterans Parkway.

“My goal is for this to become the Arlington of the West,” said William Livingston, director of the Los Angeles National Cemetery, which is inside the park.

“The memorial is a cornerstone. It totally enhances the appearance of the cemetery,” he said.
