CSUN Administrator to Leave for New Post

A top Cal State Northridge administrator who oversaw the rebuilding of the campus after the devastating 1994 earthquake announced Thursday he will leave his post Dec. 30 for a new job in the chancellor’s office.

Arthur J. Elbert, vice president for administration and finance, will become senior director of facilities projects for the California State University Chancellor’s Office. Elbert will be responsible for development, off-campus centers, disaster recovery and facilities acquisitions.

Elbert came to CSUN in 1995 after managing $100 million in capital improvements at the University of Oklahoma. He replaced a scandal-mired couple who were managing the post-quake reconstruction effort.

CSUN President Blenda J. Wilson censured and reassigned then-Vice President Bill Chatham and his wife, Jane, then Wilson’s special assistant, for accepting gifts from a quake recovery contractor.

Leading the recovery efforts, Elbert helped secure $327 million for repairs and new construction.

In a prepared statement Wilson also credited Elbert with playing “a central role in negotiating the public/private partnership with Alfred Mann for the development of the North Campus biotechnology park.”

Earlier this year, Mann, a Sylmar biomedical entrepreneur, announced he will bankroll the new $80-million biotech park and move his company, MiniMed Inc., to the facility.

No replacement has been named.
