Council Moves to Annex Condo Project

A small chunk of Woodland Hills may soon be annexed by the city of Calabasas, a friendly takeover aimed at uniting two halves of a condominium complex that straddles the jurisdictions.

The Calabasas City Council voted Wednesday to proceed with the annexation process, which would require formal approval from the city of Los Angeles. When the development--a gated community of 95 townhouses known as Creekside Calabasas Park--was built in the mid-1980s, part of it was in the city of Los Angeles and part in the county, Calabasas City Manager Chuck Cate said. The boundaries became more confusing when Calabasas incorporated in 1991, splitting the townhouse development between two cities.

“It doesn’t make sense to have, within a gated community, one side of the street in the city of L.A. and the other in the city of Calabasas,” said Stu Schlossberg, president of the Creekside homeowners’ group, which supports the annexation.

“Things get confusing,” he said. “In an emergency situation, does the Los Angeles Police Department come or the county sheriff?”

The change is subject to approval by the Local Agency Formation Commission and Los Angeles City Council, Cate said.
