Lanie Kimbrough; Longtime Ventura Resident

Longtime Ventura resident Lanie Kimbrough died Friday following a lengthy illness. She was 85.

Kimbrough was born Feb. 3, 1913, in Chilicothe, Texas, to Benjamin and Blanche Perry. Kimbrough, known as “Juanita” to her family and friends, lived in several cities as a child.

As a young adult, Kimbrough worked at a five-and-dime store in San Antonio, Texas, where she started dating her husband-to-be, James “Jim” Kimbrough. They were married Aug. 15, 1932, and lived in Texas 13 years.

In 1945, Kimbrough and her husband moved to Ventura, where he worked as a city firefighter.

Kimbrough was active in the San Buenaventura Mission’s Rosary Altar Society and Holy Cross School’s parents guild. She was a dedicated member and mentor with Alcoholics Anonymous.

In Ventura, Kimbrough also worked at several apparel stores.

Kimbrough was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by a son, James Kimbrough; five daughters, Lanie Jo Springer, Elizabeth Kimbrough, Theresa Ann Atha, Mary Kmiecek, Susan Ulibarri; 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at San Buenaventura Mission led by Msgr. Patrick J. O’Brien. Burial will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kimbrough’s name to the San Buenaventura Mission Building Fund in Ventura.
