Despite smaller-than-expected enrollment, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District is financially solvent, officials said. A shortfall of about 200 students has translated into a $695,000 budget shortfall in the current school year, but the district will be able to maintain the state-mandated 3% budget reserves, or about $3 million, officials said.

The budget also seems to indicate that the district is much closer to being a basic-aid district--primarily funded through local property tax revenue.
