The California Department of Education recently announced public elementary school nominations for National Blue Ribbon awards. Seven of the 49 schools nominated are in Los Angeles County, including Welby Way Elementary in West Hills, said state Department of Education spokeswoman Mary Lou Schmidt.

The nominees were selected from among 91 California Distinguished Schools. Welby Way was named a distinguished school in May.

“Everyone here has very high expectations for all students,” said Molly Schroeder, magnet coordinator at Welby Way. “We feel honored we made it as far as we have.”

A national review panel will read the schools’ applications and send teams to visit selected schools starting in February, Schmidt said. National Blue Ribbon Schools will be announced May 25.

Nominations for the national award are based on several factors, such as student support, curriculum and leadership. Schroeder said Welby Way’s staff put hundreds of hours into preparing the application for a National Blue Ribbon honor, the highest award bestowed by the U.S. Department of Education.

“It was a rigorous process but well worth it,” she said.
