5 Family Members Die When Car Sinks in Pond
A family of five died when their car veered off a road in northern Ohio, became airborne and landed in a pond.
“Witnesses said they gradually drifted off the right side of the road, and the car sank almost immediately after hitting the water,” State Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Gockstetter said Sunday.
The Ford Escort was submerged in 15 feet of icy water for about 30 minutes Saturday afternoon before divers pulled the victims from the car. Rescue crews tried unsuccessfully to revive them.
The dead were identified as Dara Ball, 38; her husband, Robert Ball, 40, both from Tiffin; her daughters, Kaleena Fawver, 16, and Kara Fawver, 11, both from Leipsic; and Robert Ball’s father, Gordon Ball, 71, of Kansas, Ohio.
The accident occurred near Willard, about 60 miles southeast of Toledo.
