Brown Carries No. 7 Tar Heels

North Carolina Coach Sylvia Hatchell just waited to see who had the right touch.

Juana Brown emerged as the sharp shooter, and Hatchell made sure she got the ball Sunday as the seventh-ranked Tar Heels defeated No. 11 Alabama, 90-75, in the ACC-SEC Challenge at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Brown scored 26 points, including six three-pointers, to lead North Carolina (13-1).

Nikki Teasley added 24 points for North Carolina. Dominique Canty led Alabama (8-3) with 26 points.

No. 14 Clemson 60, Louisiana State 58--Itoro Umoh’s driving basket with 3.1 seconds remaining gave the Tigers a victory in the opening game of the ACC-SEC Challenge. Clemson (10-0) trailed the entire second half until Umoh scored two late field goals. Amy Geren led the Tigers with 29 points, including 15 of 18 free throws. April Brown led LSU (8-2) with 19 points and Marie Ferdinand added 12.

No. 5 Georgia 91, Boise State 51--Coco Miller scored 18 points and Elena Vishniakova added 16 to help the Lady Bulldogs win the championship of the Boise State Christmas Classic at Boise, Idaho.

Georgia (10-0) opened a 26-9 lead midway through the first half on the inside shooting of Vishniakova, who also grabbed seven rebounds. Tawnya Gray had 13 points for Boise State (6-5).

No. 9 Colorado State 84, Wake Forest 69--Becky Hammon scored 25 points to lead the Rams in the opening round of the Oakland Tribune Classic. Farah McDill added 17 points and Heather Haanen had 12 points for Colorado State (12-0), which extended its best start in school history. Alisha Mosley scored 17 points to lead Wake Forest (4-6), which has lost five of its last six games.

The Rams will meet California, a 40-35 winner over Pittsburgh, for the championship tonight.

No. 18 Iowa State 80, Northern Iowa 73--Stacy Frese made eight three-pointers to tie a school record, and scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Cyclones at Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Frese, whose previous best was 25 points last season, had 20 in the second half as Iowa State (7-1) built a 16-point lead, then survived a late charge by the Panthers (7-1), who were led by Nadine Brandt’s 15 points.

No. 20 Nebraska 85, North Texas 67--Brooke Schwartz scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half to lead the Cornhuskers at Lincoln, Neb.

Nebraska (10-1) played the last 9:17 without Coach Paul Sanderford, who was ejected after receiving his second technical foul. Jalie Mitchell led North Texas (7-3) with 15 points.

No. 23 Kansas 71, Washington 62--Jennifer Jackson scored 18 points and made four clutch free throws to help the Jayhawks win the championship of the Seattle Times Husky Classic. Lynn Pride scored 18 points and Nakia Sanford 14 for Kansas (9-3). Megan Franza and Amber Hall scored 16 points each for Washington (3-5).
