Mats Sundin scored two goals and Alyn McCauley had a goal and two assists Monday night as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 7-1, at Toronto.

The Maple Leafs, who lead the NHL with 105 goals, have scored 14 in the last two games, with McCauley collecting seven points during that span.

“We’ve won a few games and the fans have gotten behind us,” McCauley said. “It’s fun to play here now.”

Said Maple Leaf Coach Pat Quinn, whose team defeated the New York Rangers, 7-4, on Saturday but gave up three late goals: “There are still areas that I’m not happy with, but with a game like this, it’s hard to knock them down.”

Goaltender Curtis Joseph made 30 saves against the Penguins as the Maple Leafs were outshot, 31-27.

Jason Smith, Derek King, Sergei Berezin and Mike Johnson also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won 10 of their last 11 home games. Jan Hrdina scored for Pittsburgh.

Buffalo 4, Carolina 1--Jason Woolley had a goal and two assists and Dominik Hasek made 19 saves for the Sabres at Greensboro, N.C.

Miroslav Satan and Michael Peca also scored for the Sabres, who won for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

Robert Kron scored for Carolina, which lost for only the second time in its last eight home games. Trevor Kidd made 29 saves after making 38 in the Hurricanes’ 3-2 victory at Buffalo on Saturday.

“We played pretty much the same way we did on Saturday. The difference this time was we were able to beat Kidd,” Satan said. “He played pretty well tonight, but he made some spectacular saves on Saturday.”

Buffalo improved to 14-0 when leading after two periods as Hasek earned his league-best 17th victory.

Montreal 2, Dallas 2--Darryl Sydor’s goal at 13:54 of the third period lifted the Stars into a tie at Montreal as the Canadiens equaled a 50-year-old team winless mark.

The Canadiens remained winless in December at 0-5-5--matching the club’s 10-game winless streak from the 1947-48 season. The team record is 12 games without a victory set in 1926 and equaled in 1935.

Sydor beat Jeff Hackett for his ninth goal as the Stars, whose 19-5-6 record is the NHL’s best, stretched their unbeaten streak to nine games.

Benoit Brunet and Patrick Poulin scored in the second period for the Canadiens before Sergei Zubov responded with only 30 seconds left in the period.
