11am & 2pm: Dance

This year, two very familiar and very different stagings of “The Nutcracker” have arrived in major venues just in time for Christmas and will stay through the weekend. Credited to company directors Natalia Kasatkina and Vladimir Vasiliov, the Moscow Classical Ballet “Nutcracker” dispenses with Christmas cheer in favor of hard-sell virtuosity. (See review, Page TK.) In contrast, the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago staging is traditional in nearly every way except for its American setting. Indeed, the late Robert Joffrey incorporated many different “Nutcracker” traditions in his 1987 production for his company. And pleasure in those traditions--how they complement one another, even how they clash--helps give his “Nutcracker” great sophistication as well as splendor.
