Police Say Dead Man Was Local Mechanic

A 26-year-old man fatally shot in Sun Valley on Sunday afternoon has been identified by police as a self-employed Oxnard mechanic.

Police said Monday that they still have no idea why Jose Jimenez, who lived in Oxnard for at least two years, was slain on a residential street in the east San Fernando Valley.

“All of his connections are in Oxnard,” said Det. Mike Coffey of the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood Division. “We’ve talked to his family. His family has given us nothing we can hang our hat on.”

Coffey said Jimenez had a brother in Los Angeles and the rest of his family lives in Mexico. The victim had no criminal background, the detective said. Police have ruled out robbery as a motive and do not believe the killing was gang-related.

Jimenez was discovered shot multiple times in the upper torso by police who were responding to reports of gunfire at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the 8100 block of Troost Avenue. He was pronounced dead 15 minutes later.

Police think Jimenez was brought to the residential area by two Latino men whom neighbors saw leaving the scene in a white car after the shooting, Coffey said.

“We’re speculating they’re involved in his killing,” the detective said. “We don’t have any motive at all at this point.”
