Broad on Future of Los Angeles

Share

Re “Say Goodbye to La-La Land,” Commentary, Jan. 26: Eli Broad neglected to include two major museums that are on the southern end of downtown Los Angeles.

The state’s complex, which will include the new Museum of Science and Industry and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, has been in Exposition Park for many, many years. He should come to the Natural History Museum some day to observe the glee that children express when they see the dueling dinosaurs in the entry. Both of these museums accommodate thousands of school-age children as well as many adults who get enjoyment and knowledge from the exhibits.

Art, sports and theater aren’t the only indication of our “coming of age.” These museums have been here a long time. And they could use some of the money that is going to fund the other “symbols.”

Broad’s op-ed piece was written like a true spokesperson from the Westside. Los Angeles will not come together until these self-appointed oligarchs touch the real center of this city.

The Getty Museum should have been built downtown or in an area that could have used the financial shot.

The leadership of this city must be made up of the “real” L.A., meaning the voices and votes of people who are smart enough to realize that money does not make the wiser and better person.

Hollywood and its excesses (Broad’s words) saved this city.

L.A. does have the makings of a city of inclusion and not an Eli Broad-type city of exclusion!
