3 Suspects Held in Series of Burglaries at Banks

Three suspects that the FBI believes may be responsible for 18 bank break-ins in the past year were charged Monday at the federal court building downtown with attempted burglary.

Anthony Brown, 31, of Los Angeles, Johnny Campbell, 24, of Hawthorne, and Janiel Ward, 23, of Ladera Heights, were arrested Sunday during what authorities described as a botched burglary at a Union Bank branch on Centinela Avenue in Culver City after a silent alarm was triggered.

FBI spokesman John Hoos said the suspects’ method of operation--disarming bank alarms to gain access to automated teller machine vaults inside the bank--was evident in incidents in Inglewood, Gardena, Culver City, Los Angeles, Venice, Westchester and Hawthorne. The FBI does not classify the crimes as bank robberies because holdups did not occur.

A man and a woman arrested along with the suspects were released Monday pending further investigation, said Sgt. Chris Gutierrez of the Culver City Police Department.
