Activists Picket Courthouse to Urge Rights for Homeless

Share

Activists carrying signs saying “Homeless Rights Are Human Rights” demonstrated in front of the Municipal Courthouse Tuesday prior to meeting with court officials regarding their upcoming trial on trespassing charges.

David Busch and Michael Reinsborough talked to more than 50 passersby about their quest to convince the city of Santa Monica to open an emergency homeless shelter at the vacant Flamingo Hotel on Ocean Avenue, Busch said.

They also bore a sign reading, “Santa Monica: 4% of your budget would shelter all.”

Busch, Reinsborough and Jennafer Waggoner were arrested last November at the hotel, where Busch said they had been providing meals for a week to 100 homeless people. Since then, they urged that the city look into creating more homeless shelters.

The activists’ attorney, Cynthia Anderson, could not be reached for comment Tuesday, but Busch said a preliminary hearing is scheduled March 3.
