Alarcon to Address Alcohol Policy Group
Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon will speak Thursday at a meeting of the San Fernando Valley Alcohol Policy Coalition.
The coalition, represented by social service organizations, government agencies, homeowner groups and private citizens, has been holding monthly meetings since 1991 to address alcohol-related issues, said Don Schultz, president of the Van Nuys Homeowners Assn. and the coalition’s co-chairman.
“We try to deal on a local level in the San Fernando Valley with alcohol-related problems and on the state level we work to influence legislation in Sacramento,” Schultz said.
Al Jeffries, executive director of the Valley branch of the National Council, said Alarcon was invited to speak because he has been an ally in the coalition’s efforts to address alcohol and tobacco issues in the northeast Valley.
“The main issue that we hope [Alarcon] will address is billboards that advertise alcohol and tobacco products,” Jeffries said.
Thursday’s meeting, like all coalition meetings, will be free and open to the public. The meeting is scheduled from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Van Nuys office of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, which is a member of the coalition, at 14557 Friar St., Van Nuys.
