Port Keeps No. 1 Spot With Record Container Traffic

The Port of Long Beach kept its spot as the No. 1 container port in the United States when a record 3.5 million containers passed through the facility last year, a 14.3% increase over 1996, port officials said Wednesday.

Container business has grown annually since 1990 by an average 14%, they added.

The bulk of the port’s business is done with five Asian areas: South Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

“The record number of containers reflects the strength of the U.S. economy,” said Richard Steinke, executive director of the port.
