Golfers Make Eager Workers

How many high school students would be thrilled to go around picking up trash?

The golfers at five local schools can’t wait.

They will be helping clean up fairways at Valencia Country Club after each round of the Nissan Open.

In addition to their cleanup duties, golfers from Hart, Valencia, Saugus, Canyon and Notre Dame high schools will serve as caddies during the pro-am portion of the event. College of the Canyons golfers are also taking part.

“I’m pretty excited,” said senior Kevin Coghlan, Notre Dame’s top golfer. “We’ll be on our best behavior. I always drive by the Big V and hear it’s a good course.”

Each of the high school golf programs will receive a cash donation for having players work the tournament. Each player who caddies will be paid $50.

One person who won’t be a caddie is Hart Coach Dennis Ford. “Heck, no,” he said. “I can’t carry a club more than two holes before keeling over.”

Added Ford: “Everybody in the area is more than a little bit excited.”
