Bush Points Out Shining Volunteer Work

Former President George Bush presented annual Points of Light awards at the Disneyland Hotel Thursday to six corporations for their employees’ volunteer work.

The award-winners were:

* AT&T; Wireless Services, for a broad program of volunteer and philanthropic activities that included management.

* AXA, a French-based insurance and asset-management firm in partnership with The Equitable Companies, which became the first foreign-based corporation to receive a Point of Light. AXA was cited for the breadth of its program, which includes 7,000 employees in 11 countries.

* Chase Manhattan, for its “Partners in the Community,” an international network of workers and retirees coordinated through a core network of 125 volunteers.

* Gap Inc., which has endorsed volunteer involvement since the company’s founding in 1969. About 70% of the company’s 60,000 employees volunteer.

* UGI Utilities, Inc., where employees help improve literacy among youngsters and prepare high school students for careers.

* Unitrode Corp., for programs that began in 1995 but quickly involved more than one-quarter of its domestic work force.

Officials of each winning corporations were presented with a glass trophy and a certificate.

In addition to the national award winners, more than 60 Orange County businesses received special citations for participating in the county Corporate Committed Volunteer Project over the past 13 years.
