When comic strip hero Dick Tracy introduced the two-way wrist radio about 50 years ago, it seemed an intriguing bit of futurism.

Not anymore.

A Japanese phone company has issued 40 prototype wristwatch mobile phones to various officials here for emergency use. And no one will have to dial with a stick pin. The phones are voice activated.

Speaking of emergencies, the Nagano Organizing Committee thought it had one on its hands the other day.

A package arrived at NAOC headquarters and when passed through an X-ray machine, as is customary, it appeared to include radio receivers and remote controls.

Fearing an explosive device, security officials opened the box “under controlled conditions.”

Inside were toilet seat warmers, hand warmers and gloves, sent to help keep Olympic volunteers warm.

Hawaii-born sumo wrestling champion Musashimaru, who will precede flag bearer Eric Flaim when the U.S. athletes march in the opening ceremony, weighs in at 440 pounds.

Asked what he eats to maintain his weight, Musashimaru responded, “Anything in the way.”
