Harbor District Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr. announced Friday that he will run for the 36th Congressional District seat Jane Harman plans to vacate so she can seek the Democratic nomination for governor.

“At the urging of many civic leaders and community residents, I have decided to run for Congress,” Svorinich said. “An opportunity has now arisen to bring my core public policy belief--making our communities better places to live, work and go to school--to a higher level of government service.”

A native of San Pedro, Svorinich, 37, was elected to the City Council in 1993. He was reelected in April to a second four-year term.

If elected, Svorinich would serve a district that runs from San Pedro to Santa Monica and includes all of the South Bay. He will face Assemblyman Steven T. Kuykendall of Rancho Palos Verdes and that city’s former mayor, Susan Brooks, in the Republican primary.
