A fire Friday in an empty portable classroom injured a workman, who suffered second- and third-degree burns over 25% of his body, authorities said.

John Williams was welding a pipe underneath a trailer to be used as a classroom at the Wonderland Angels Preschool and Kindergarten when sparks ignited insulation and the fire spread to the floor, sheriff’s officials said.

Students were evacuated from the school in the 15200 block of South Avalon Boulevard, said the nursery school’s co-owner Cynthia Abbott.

Williams was listed in serious condition at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, hospital officials said. He was later transferred to the County/USC Medical Center burn unit.
