Speeding and Big Rigs

I agree with the letter “Big-Rig Accidents” (Feb. 1). I would challenge anyone to find a large truck going the 55 mph speed limit from the Conejo Grade to Oxnard in either direction. These trucks routinely travel at 65 to 70 mph.
While it is true that cars also speed, they are not pushing 45,000 to 80,000 pounds of weight down the highway.
There is a reason for the 55 mph speed limit in California for vehicles with trailers and big-rig trucks, but it must be lost on the California Highway Patrol. In recent years, the CHP has become a nonparticipant in enforcement involving anyone with trailers or big rigs, hence the increase in accidents involving those vehicles.
Sadly, it is not confined to Ventura County. Just travel to Las Vegas or Arizona on I-15 or I-10, and you can watch big rigs running 70 to 75 mph without fear in California.
How do we get the Highway Patrol to get back to the basics?
