Adult Businesses May Face Tough New Rules

Exotic dancers, lingerie models and their bosses at adult businesses may soon have to pass a criminal background check under new rules being considered by the City Council tonight.

Gregory Diaz, an attorney for the city, said the modified ordinance is intended to toughen existing laws and bring them into compliance with recent federal court decisions.

It provides stringent new requirements for adult-business owners, including the criminal background checks.

The new rules also would prohibit adult businesses from operating near schools, residential areas, playgrounds, places of worship and even cemeteries.

Existing adult-only stores would have six months to get employees licensed and up to three years to relocate if their building is within 300 feet of “sensitive use” facilities such as schools or churches, Diaz said.
