City, Railroad to Split Crossings Repair Cost

Share

A thrilled City Council recently approved a railroad company’s proposal to pick up half the cost of upgrading railroad crossings in the city.

The city tried for years without success to get the crossings improved by Southern Pacific Railroad Co. and had set aside $148,000 to do the work on four crossings. Now, the city will be able to use half of that money to improve additional crossings, officials said.

Within the next two months, Union Pacific will provide material, labor and supervision for replacing the existing asphalt crossings at Harbor Boulevard, Cypress and Walnut streets and Monte Vista Avenue with smooth concrete. The company, which recently merged with Southern Pacific, also will replace rails. The city will provide detour plans while the work is being done.
