Artists’ Help Sought in Renovating Boardwalk

At a meeting tonight, city officials will solicit help from artists--ranging from fledgling sculptors to renowned muralists--to assist in renovating the Venice Boardwalk.
The city’s Recreation and Parks and Cultural Affairs departments, along with Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, are looking for artists to assist in the renovation in a number of ways, said project manager Kathleen Chan of Recreation and Parks.
Some artists will work with the city’s design consultants, some will design and implement projects involving young artists, and some will create art for public spaces along Ocean Front Walk between Rose Avenue and Washington Boulevard, officials said.
Projects could range from murals to tiling to decorative trash cans, Chan said. Artists will be paid for their work. Chan said construction on the public art will probably begin in September and continue for 18 months.
Tonight’s meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Galanter’s Westchester field office, 7166 W. Manchester Ave.
