Tucker’s Death Is No Laughing Matter

Share

Usually one of my favorite features in your paper is “Laugh Lines.” However, after Feb. 3-4, I didn’t laugh. I cried. Literally.

Whether or not we are proponents of capital punishment, none of us really knows what we participated in by allowing the state of Texas to kill Karla Faye Tucker.

That people found this grist for the comic mills is unbelievable. That you found such jokes fit to print is sad beyond words.

European newspapers treat the execution of Tucker as another example of American hypocrisy--preaching human rights and practicing barbarism--and The Times confirms their judgment by making the execution the subject of a series of tasteless jokes.

Even in the state The Times now finds itself in, I can’t believe you are printing jokes about an execution.
