City Seeking OK to Annex Newport Coast

Share

After months of financial research and meetings with homeowners, the city has asked the Local Agency Formation Commission for permission to annex Newport Coast.

“At the very worst, this won’t hurt us at all,” Councilman John W. Hedges said. “At the very best, this is going to be a big benefit to the city.”

The city’s finance committee, with the help of a financial consultant, recently completed revenue projections, finding that the development would generate more money than it would require in services.

The annexation, if approved by LAFCO’s board, would be the largest in the history of Newport Beach, increasing its size by more than 50%. Expanding the

city limits to include Newport Coast will add more than 7 square miles of land to the city, which is about 13 square miles.

LAFCO has not yet set a date for a hearing on the application.
