District’s Foundation Receives $10,000 Gift

A $10,000 gift given to the elementary school district’s foundation by a private donor will be used to support teachers who are enhancing their classroom lesson plans.

The Fullerton School Board this week accepted the donation on a 4-1 vote, with Trustee Kim Ann Guth dissenting. The majority said students will benefit from the gift, which will be divided into 15 grants worth as much as $1,500 each.

One grant is being awarded to two teachers at Rolling Hills Elementary School, to be used on a quilting project that incorporates lessons on language arts, geometry, writing and history. Another grant will allow two teachers at D. Russell Parks Junior High to pay for a college literature professor and poet to visit their classes.

Guth said she feared accepting the gift would set a precedent in which anyone could donate money to be used on special interests that may be educationally unsound. Her colleagues said they could always reject a gift if they disapproved of the donation.
