Two men were in Ventura County Jail Thursday on suspicion of auto theft after a Camarillo city employee spotted them dismantling a pickup outside a city maintenance yard, authorities said.

Martin Osuna, 24, of Palmdale and Rolando Velasquez, 20, of Lancaster were booked Wednesday on two counts of suspected auto theft, on suspicion of prowling and on suspicion of possessing stolen property, a jail spokeswoman said.

About 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, Ryan Grizzard, a city employee, saw Osuna and Velasquez at the entrance to the maintenance yard on South Glenn Drive taking apart the pickup, which turned out to be reported stolen from Lancaster, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Larry Kelley.

The suspects fled in another vehicle and were chased by Grizzard, who called 911. The men abandoned the vehicle in a residential area on Grandview Drive, Kelley said.

When deputies arrived, they surrounded the area, and a sheriff’s helicopter and canine unit assisted in the search. About 7 a.m., the men were found near Chapel and Cedar drives and were arrested.
