Ex-Anteater Polowski Among Three Signed to Play Soccer for Zodiac

P.J. Polowski, the all-time scoring leader at UC Irvine who went on to play for the Splash and the Las Vegas Dustdevils in the former Continental Indoor Soccer League, and two other former Southland players signed Friday with the Zodiac, an A-League professional soccer team based in Mission Viejo.

Shawn Saunders, a former Woodbridge and Santa Margarita high school standout who played at Fresno State, and Mike Matson, who played at Lakewood Artesia High and Fresno State, also joined the Zodiac, which will play its games at UC Irvine this season.

The Orange County chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will present $14,250 in scholarships to 27 high school and community college players during its 28th annual banquet March 2 at the Doubletree Hotel in Orange.

The players, selected from the 47 nominated by their schools, had to have a 3.3 or better grade-point average. They are:

Anaheim Sports President Tony Tavares, who oversees the operation of the Angels and the Mighty Ducks, will be the featured speaker Tuesday at the Sports Newsmakers Luncheon at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim.

Cost for the noon luncheon is $15 prepaid, $20 at the door.
