Egyptian Adventure

Regarding “Risks of Traveling Abroad” (Travel Insider, Feb. 1): My wife and I just returned (mid-December) from a 13-day tour of the Holy Land that included two days in Egypt.

We traveled by cruise liner and were reported as the first large group to arrive since the [November terrorist] attack near Luxor. Arriving in Port Said, we were met by all the local dignitaries, and the women were given flowers. Everywhere we went, people stopped to say “welcome.” We walked the streets, went to the market area and really never felt ill at ease. Perhaps it was because there were armed soldiers everywhere.

After leaving Port Said, we went to Alexandria and again were met by officials with a “red carpet” and flowers. We boarded buses for a trip to Cairo and the Pyramids at Giza. During the ride, we were always escorted by a police car with lights flashing and siren operating. In addition, we had an armed guard inside each bus.
