Council Gives Early OK to Pet Sitters at Bark Park

Share

Professional dog walkers and pet sitters soon can take their canine clients to Bark Park.

City laws prohibit public parks from being used for commercial purposes. But council members tentatively agreed to allow paid pet services at Bark Park, citing the best interest of the animals.

The council recently began considering the change after a pet service received a ticket for using the park, at Newport Boulevard and Arlington Avenue. Under the old law, working in a park was an infraction, said David Alkema, the city’s parks superintendent.

The amended law still contains limits for pet services: workers cannot solicit clients or collect fees at Bark Park.

The new law would likely apply to the city’s second dog park planned for Fairview Regional Park.

The council is expected to give final approval to the measure on March 3, with the change becoming effective 30 days later.
