Federal Housing Official Visits Community Center

A federal housing official visited a Gardena community center Thursday to see Housing and Urban Development dollars at work.

“I came to this community to see firsthand our investment,” Federal Housing Commissioner Nicolas Retsinas told about 100 senior citizens at the Nakaoka Memorial Community Center. “You keep doing good things, we’ll keep investing.”

HUD is spending about $7 million to build an 85-unit housing complex for senior citizens in Gardena that is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

The federal agency also provided funding for the community center to put in an elevator, install ramps and improve the structure for use by the disabled.

Retsinas, who visited Gardena at the urging of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles), said he was impressed by the community center’s programs. Waters said she wanted federal housing officials to see a neighborhood that was making good use of federal dollars.
