Daly Opposes Plan for Swap Meet at Drive-In

A proposal for an outdoor swap meet at the former Anaheim Drive-In has met with resistance from Mayor Tom Daly.

The Planning Commission in January approved a request to establish a weekend swap meet at the site.

But Daly said he thinks a swap meet is inappropriate there. “I want to aim to higher,” he said, calling for a March 17 City Council hearing on the proposal.

In 1996, the Planning Commission approved plans by Los Angeles-based Pacific Theatres for a multiscreen theater and entertainment complex on the 25-acre North Lemon Street site.

Those plans have since been scrapped because of competition from similar multiplex theaters that have opened in the area, said Neil Haltrecht, vice president of real estate and development.

“We saw too many theaters coming up,” he said. “The market was adequately served.”

The swap meet would only be temporary as the company continues to explore a permanent project for the old drive-in, Haltrecht said.
