After-School Tutors Sought for 25 Kids

The Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo needs volunteers for a one-on-one tutoring program set to begin Monday.

Although 25 children need the service, only six volunteer tutors have signed up so far.

Each volunteer will meet with a child between the ages of 6 and 18 to assist with school homework, including spelling, English and math assignments. Volunteers are asked to participate one to two hours per week for the nine-week program.

“The kids get homework assignments and then don’t get home until 6:30, when they have to eat dinner, take baths and get ready for school the next day,” said Sean Hogan, the club’s educational director.

“If they get their homework done immediately after school, then they can relax and spend time with their family when they get home,” Hogan said.

Club administrators ask that tutors pick a time to consistently meet with the child in the program, which is open Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

“The one-on-one tutoring lets kids focus on their homework without being distracted in a larger group,” Hogan said.

“And it develops friendships and role models, rather than just the academic side of tutoring.”

Volunteers will continue to be accepted until there are enough to serve each child.
