Triple Play, Little Else for Northridge

Marco Estrada’s home run and a second-inning triple-play were the lone highlights for the Cal State Northridge baseball team in a 6-1 loss to Grand Canyon (Ariz.) in a tournament game Thursday afternoon at Grand Canyon.

With Ben Menke on second and Ronnie Holtorf on first, Matt Forbes lined to Northridge’s Adrian Mendoza, who stepped on first to double up Holtorf and threw to Nakia Hill covering second to force out Menke.

Jose Vasquez (2-3) pitched seven innings in the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits--including a three-run home run by Holtorf in the fourth inning. Vasquez struck out four and walked three.

Three Grand Canyon (9-3) pitchers combined to limit Northridge (9-7) to six hits.

The Master’s 11-2, Albertson 2-3--Kurt Fillmore homered and doubled to drive in three runs in the first game for host Master’s (4-3), but Josh Higgins (0-1) allowed an unearned run in the 10th inning of the second game to prevent the Mustangs from sweeping the nonconference doubleheader.

Rob Avila also homered and drove in three runs in the first game.

Matt Berry (1-1) pitched six innings to earn the victory for Master’s. He allowed two unearned runs while striking out six and walking six.

Valley 4, Pasadena 1--Nate Laufer and Ruben Lopez combined on a four-hitter for Valley in a nonconference game called after six innings because of rain at Valley.

Alonzo Arreola drove in two runs in the sixth inning for Valley (2-7).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Wake Forest 5, Pepperdine 3--The 13th-ranked Demon Deacons (2-0) won four of six singles matches in a victory over the 10th-ranked Waves (4-3) in the Women’s National Indoor Team Tennis Championship at the University of Wisconsin.

Pepperdine’s No. 1 singles player, Zsofia Csapo, defeated Nicole Kaiwai, 6-2, 6-3, and also teamed with Angela Lawrence for an 8-4 doubles victory over Kaiwai and Mariel Verban.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 5, Mississippi 3--Brad Sceney, Mike Jessup and Kelly Guilett all won singles matches for Pepperdine in the Men’s National Indoor Team Championships in Louisville, Ky.

The Waves (10-0), off to their best start since 1981, play Illinois today.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 88, Christian Heritage 64--Jerome Joseph scored 34 points, Jeremiah Cathey had 18 and Joclin Julmist had 13 rebounds and 10 assists for The Master’s (19-10) in a nonconference game at home.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State Northridge 62, Weber State 60--Neda Milic scored with one second left and Edniesha Curry had 36 points and seven rebounds for the Matadors (12-11, 8-5) in a Big Sky Conference victory at Weber State (6-17, 6-7).

LaShaunda Fowler had 11 points and five assists for Northridge.

The Master’s 60, Christian Heritage 54--Elizabeth Hansell had 26 points and 10 rebounds in a nonconference victory for host Master’s (9-10).

Angie Britton and reserve Sara Scheffer each scored 11 for the Mustangs, with Britton grabbing eight rebounds.
