There’s No Pleasing the Austrian Ski Team

Share

This snit-fit just in from Austrian Ski Team headquarters: Thursday, Christian Mayer was told he was being replaced in Saturday’s slalom by Mario Reiter, who was a surprise gold-medal winner in the men’s combined. Mayer won the bronze.

How did Mayer handle his demotion? He quit the Austrian team and said he was going to to pursue his career with another country.

Friday, however, Austrian Siegfried Voglreiter was scratched from the slalom because of a bad back.

Will Alberto Tomba’s final Olympic event, the slalom, end with a fizzle?

Word is the 31-year-old Italian and five-time Olympic medalist is still suffering back pain after Thursday’s crash in the men’s giant slalom and is “50-50” to race Saturday.

This is Tomba’s fourth--and final--Olympic appearance. He has won three gold and two silver medals, and at least one at Calgary, Albertville and Lillehammer.
