Trustees Rethinking District Boundaries
Contradicting early reports, the Laguna Beach Unified School District board has backed away from enrolling as many as 342 students from a development along Newport Coast.
Instead, school board members are interested in changing district boundaries so the new homes in the development would sit in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, as long as the boundary change allows the Laguna district to retain a portion of the property zoned for commercial use.
“If we’re able to add income without adding students, that would be great,” Laguna board member Steven Rabago said.
The district could gain $10.6 million in revenue if the new students attend Laguna Beach schools, but parents of students enrolled in the district oppose higher school enrollments.
A meeting to discuss the issue will take place at 7 p.m. Monday in the school administration office, 550 Blumont St.
