Wilson Opposes Lockheed Court Site
Opponents of a proposal to locate a new South County courthouse at a former aerospace plant received a boost this week when Supervisor Tom Wilson announced his opposition to the site.
Wilson said he decided to oppose the Lockheed Martin building at Avenida Empresa and Avenida de las Banderas as a courthouse because it would be too expensive to convert and “because of the sentiment of the community.”
Residents, who feared a courthouse would bring crime and excessive traffic into their neighborhoods, were encouraged by the news.
“We’re going to have a neighborhood party,” resident Dan Figueroa said.
“This issue has brought a lot of us closer together.”
In addition to the Lockheed Martin site, the county has said it is considering a site in the future Ladera community and an empty lot off the Foothill toll road and Antonio Parkway.
Wilson acknowledged that his opposition to the Lockheed Martin building doesn’t officially eliminate it from consideration.
The five-member Board of Supervisors will have ultimate say on which site is selected.
